コンテナ船SAFMARINE MAKUTUは、船長ほか20人が乗り組み、大韓民国釜山港に向けて紀伊水道を南進中、また、貨物船PICESは、船長ほか12人が乗り組み、愛知県三河港に向けて紀伊水道を南東進中、平成25年10月2日21時01分ごろ、紀伊水道南西部において、SAFMARINE MAKUTUの右舷船首部と PICESの左舷後部とが衝突した。 SAFMARINE MAKUTUには、球状船首部右舷側及び右舷船首部に凹損及び擦過傷が生じ、PICES には、左舷後部水線下に破口、亀裂、凹損及び擦過傷、左舷ウイングに破損、ボート甲板左舷後部に凹損、同部ハンドレールに曲損及び擦過傷、左舷ビルジキールに曲損が生じたが、両船共に死傷者はいなかった。
