Questions and answers
The website
- Do I need an account to look up a ship?
No. Every ship, port, company and sanctions page is free to read without signing in, including positions, ownership, inspections and history summaries. An account adds follows, alerts and saved lists.
- Where does Voydar's data come from?
Ship positions come from AIS, the radio signal ships broadcast for safety at sea, picked up by receivers on shore, including Beacon stations run by volunteers. Identity, ownership, inspections and sanctions come from public registries, port authorities and official lists. Every fact shows its source, and anything Voydar calculates itself, such as an arrival estimate, is labelled as an estimate. How Voydar works explains the method.
- Why is a ship's position out of date?
AIS travels by radio, so a receiver only hears ships within roughly 20 to 60 km of it, more from a high antenna. Far out at sea, in an area with no receiver nearby, or when a ship's AIS is switched off or broken, the position stops updating until the ship comes back into range. Voydar always shows when a position was received; an old position is marked stale with its real age instead of being hidden or guessed.
- How do I report wrong data?
Email support@voydar.com with the page address (or the IMO number), what is wrong and, if you have one, a source such as a registry entry or the owner's website. We check every report against sources before changing a record. Most records come from an outside source, so we may also point you to that source to correct it at the origin.
- A photo shows the wrong ship, or it's my photo.
Photos come from openly licensed collections and are credited to their authors. If a photo shows the wrong ship, email us the page address. If it is your photo and you want it removed or credited differently, email us or send a notice under our copyright policy.
My Voydar
- How do I sign in?
One account works on voydar.com, in the mobile app and in the Terminal. You can sign in four ways: with an email code (enter your email and we send a sign-in link and a code; open the link or type the code), with a password, with Sign in with Apple, or with Sign in with Google. Using an email address that has no account yet creates a free account.
- The sign-in email didn't arrive.
Sign-in emails come from login@voydar.com. Check your spam, junk and promotions folders, and that the address you typed is right. If you asked more than once, use the newest email. Still nothing after a few minutes? Try Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google with the same address, or email us.
- I forgot my password.
Sign in with an email code instead: it works for every account, whichever way you created it.
- I signed in with Apple and now see a different email address.
If you chose Hide My Email, Apple gives Voydar a private relay address, so your account is under that address rather than your own. Sign in with Apple again to reach the same account, and write to us from the relay address (or tell us what it is) if you need help with it.
- What does following a ship do?
Following a ship puts it on your My Voydar page and sends you its arrivals and departures. A free account follows up to 5 ships. Manage them under Account → Following.
- Push alerts aren't arriving on my phone.
Check these in order:
- Phone settings. Notifications for Voydar must be allowed: on iPhone in Settings → Notifications → Voydar, on Android in Settings → Apps → Voydar → Notifications. Focus or Do Not Disturb modes can hold them back.
- The app. Open Voydar, go to Account and turn on notifications for this phone. Do this again after reinstalling the app, moving to a new phone or signing out.
- What you follow. Alerts are sent for ships and ports you follow, by your alert settings. Check that push is on for those alerts and that no quiet hours cover the time.
- Your plan. The Free plan pushes arrivals and departures for up to 5 followed ships, up to 10 a day. Plus and Pro push every alert type, up to 20 a day.
Alerts that don't push still reach the Alerts tab in the app and your email. If everything above is right and nothing arrives, email us with your phone model and the ship you follow.
- How do I delete my account?
On voydar.com go to Account → Delete account (voydar.com/account/delete). In the mobile app go to Account → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and permanent. If you can't sign in, email privacy@voydar.com from your account's email address and we will delete it for you. What is deleted, and the little we have to keep, is in the privacy policy.
- Does deleting my account cancel my subscription?
It cancels a subscription bought on voydar.com. A subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play must be cancelled there (see below), because Apple and Google run those subscriptions; deleting the app or the account does not stop them.
Terminal
- What is the Terminal?
A multi-panel workstation for people who follow fleets: watchlists, port boards, a fleet screener, sanctions and chokepoints side by side. It opens at terminal.voydar.com with the same account you use here. See the Terminal page.
- How do I try it?
Pro comes with a 7-day free trial and no card. Start it from the Terminal page or from Account → Plan and billing. One trial per account; your workspaces are kept when the trial ends.
- Is there a Terminal on Plus?
Plus includes Terminal Lite: the Marine Terminal with a few saved workspaces. Pro opens everything else. The limits for each plan are on Pricing.
- The Terminal says my account has no access.
Check that you are signed in with the account that has Pro or a trial: open Account → Plan and billing on voydar.com. If the plan is right there and the Terminal still refuses, sign out of the Terminal and back in, then email us.
Helm
- What is Helm?
Helm is for your own boat: plan journeys against your weather and tide limits, keep the logbook, maintenance and documents, and bring your crew in. It opens at helm.voydar.com with your Voydar account. See the Helm page.
- Is my boat's information public?
No. Helm is private by construction: what you put in it is seen only by you and the people you add. It never appears on Voydar's public pages, the Terminal or the API.
- What does Helm cost?
Helm Free includes 1 boat with the logbook, journeys and basic maintenance. Crew invites come with Plus; joining someone else's boat is free on every plan.
- I can't open Helm yet.
Helm is opening to accounts in stages. When it reaches your account it opens at helm.voydar.com with no extra sign-up; until then, the free boating tools on Tools work without signing in.
API and data
- How do I get an API key?
Sign in and open Account → API keys. A free account includes 2,500 API credits a month. A key is shown once: keep it on your server, never in a web page or app. The quickstart is at Developers.
- What happens when I run out of credits?
Requests are refused, and cost nothing, until your monthly allowance renews or you add credits. Usage is shown under Account → API keys, and Credits explains what each request costs.
- Can I use Voydar from Claude or another AI assistant?
Yes, through the Voydar MCP server, which uses your account's API credits. Setup is on Developers → MCP.
- Can I download the data in bulk?
Monthly open datasets (port calls and more) are free to download from Open data, with their licence and data dictionary. For bulk or custom extracts beyond those, email us.
Billing
- How do I manage or cancel a subscription bought in the iPhone or iPad app?
Apple handles it. On your iPhone or iPad open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose Voydar. You can change or cancel it there; cancel at least 24 hours before it renews. You can also get there from Account → Manage subscription in the Voydar app.
- How do I manage or cancel a subscription bought in the Android app?
Google handles it. Open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions, and choose Voydar. You can also get there from Account → Manage subscription in the Voydar app.
- How do I manage or cancel a subscription bought on voydar.com?
Go to Account → Plan and billing (voydar.com/account/billing) and choose Manage billing and invoices. You can change your plan, update your card, download invoices or cancel there. A cancelled plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for.
- Can I get a refund?
For the App Store or Google Play, refunds are requested from Apple or Google; we can't issue them. For a new subscription bought on voydar.com, email us within 14 days of the first payment for a full refund. The details are in the terms.
- I paid, but the app still shows my old plan.
In the app, go to Account → Plan and billing and tap Restore purchases while signed in to the Voydar account you want the plan on. A plan bought on voydar.com shows in the app as soon as you sign in with the same account. If it still looks wrong, email us with the receipt.
Beacon receivers
- What is the Beacon receiver program?
Beacon is Voydar's own receiver network. Anyone with a view of the water (or the sky) can feed AIS ship signals or ADS-B aircraft signals to Voydar: build a receiver from a Raspberry Pi, a USB radio dongle and an antenna, flash the Voydar SD-card image, or add Voydar to a receiver you already run. Qualifying stations earn free Plus or Pro access, measured from the station's own data. Start with the receiver guide.
- My station isn't showing data.
Open Account → Receivers (voydar.com/account/receivers): it shows when your station last sent data and what is wrong if it isn't being accepted. The troubleshooting section of the receiver guide covers the common causes. If you are still stuck, email us with your station's name.
