THE THIEVES WANTED TO KNOW IF THE SHIP HAD COME FROM THE UNITED STATES, APPARENTLY INTENDING TO TAKE CASH FROM THE SAFE AND CREW. UPON LEARNING THE SHIP HAD BEEN AT SEA FOR WEEKS AT AN OFFSHORE OIL FIELD, THEY TOOK TWO WALKIE-TALKIES AND BINOCULARS. THE 2 CREW HOSTAGES WERE LOCKED IN A LIFEJACKET LOCKER BEFO

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil The International Maritime Bureau received a report from the owners of the M/V san Marino, a 14,366 gross ton, Cypriot flagged container vessel on 3 May 96. The vessel's master reports that the ship was attacked by armed pirates on 2 May 1996, at 0200 local, while anchored in Rio De Janeiro. The pirates approached the ship in two launches along the forward starboard side of the vessel. Five men, armed with knives, came on board. The pirates broke the seals on 22 containers
