SOUTH CHINA SEA: Chemical tanker (STOLT BOTAN) boarded 16 Aug 10 at 0145 local time while underway in position 03-15N 105-18.5E, approximately 19NM northwest of Pulau Mangkai, Indonesia. Five or six robbers armed with knives boarded the vessel via the poop deck. The master raised the alarm, mustered the crew and announced over the public address system about the incident. Nothing was reported stolen (ReCAAP).

Alert duty crew noticed the boat and raised the alarm. Ships whistle sounded, deck lights switched on and crew mustered. Pirates aborted the attempted attack upon seeing the crew alertness.

The tug activated its SSAS while underway at the above position and subsequently every 30 minutes after that. Suspected that it had been hijacked, the owners reported the incident.
