All three fishermen were reportedly released unhurt the following day, and it is believed that the owner of the Sandakan-based trawler or agents of the trawler's owner crossed the border to negotiate the immediate release of the three crewmen and the boat. When watchman threw a turnbuckle at them the intruders retreated but remained 100 meters from the ship in their boat for about an hour. The same ship had been approached three days before at
