All three fishermen were reportedly released unhurt the following day, and it is believed that the owner of the Sandakan-based trawler or agents of the trawler's owner crossed the border to negotiate the immediate release of the three crewmen and the boat. Local authorities indicated that the three Indonesian crewmen were held by unidentified gunmen because

When watchman threw a turnbuckle at them the intruders retreated but remained 100 meters from the ship in their boat for about an hour. The same ship had been approached three days before at

    BRUNEI: Thieves boarded an unidentified ship at Muara Berau anchorage 26 Dec armed with big knives and axes. When spotted by the duty officer they attacked him but when alarm was raised they jumped into the water with two ship's rafts and escaped in their boats.
