    A船は、船長A、航海士Aほか17人が乗り組み、山口県岩国市岩国港に向けて坊ノ岬南西方沖を111~112°(真方位、以下同じ。)の針路、12.6~12.7ノット(kn)の速力(対地速力、以下同じ。)で自動操舵によって航行した。 航海士Aは、甲板手を見張りに当たらせて船橋当直を行っていたところ、平成24年8月19日04時08分ごろ、左舷船首方に南西進するB船のマスト灯及び右舷灯を認め、レーダーによる監視を行った。 航海士Aは、B船がA船を避けるものと思い、針路及び速力を保持して航行を続けたが、B船が針路及び速力を変えずに接近したことから、衝突の危険を感じ、甲板手に右舵を取るように命じたものの、04時15分ごろ、114°の針路、12.6knの速力により、A船の左舷側船尾部とB船の船首部が衝突した。 B船は、船長Bほか1人が乗り組み、坊ノ岬南西方沖の漁場で底びき網漁を行うために約8.0~8.5kn
