本船は、水先人が水先を行い、福山港に向け、同港の鴻石灯標北東方沖を約8ノットの対地速力で北東進した。水先人は、福山港第1号灯標(以下「第1号灯標」という。)と福山港第2号灯標(以下「第2号灯標」という。)の南方沖に設置された刺し網用のボンデンを左舵一杯を取りながら左舷方に見て通過し、同ボンデンの北北東方約0.5海里にある第2号灯標を右舷方に見て通過する予定で福山港の掘下げ済み水路(水深16m)の入口付近を北東進した。水先人は、左舵一杯を取り、タグボート2隻に本船の右舷船首及び左舷船尾を押させながら左回頭を続けたが、第2号灯標に接近するので、舵中央として機関を全速力後進としたものの、平成26年7月1日13時52分ごろ、本船の右舷船首が第2号灯標に衝突した。水先人は、海上保安庁に本事故の発生を通報した。
